Buried in that announcement was the news that Google X, the company’s secret skunkworks lab, isn’t actually called “Google X” anymore — it’s just called “X,” and it’s directly under Alphabet.
The X lab has given us all kinds of weird science projects: Self-driving cars; the Google Glass wearable computer; Project Loon balloons to connect rural and hard-to-reach communities to the Internet.
It’s not known if all those projects will now be organized directly under Alphabet, or if they’ll find new homes elsewhere. Google did not respond to a request for comment at press time.
In the announcement, Page namechecks Wing, “our drone delivery effort,” which we first heard about almost exactly a year ago in August 2014.
Amazon has been working on drone delivery, too, and it looks like 2016 will see the e-retail giant launch a service that would get you your packages in 30 minutes or less (so long as you live in a delivery zone).
Google, which offers its own Google Shopping Express same-day delivery service, looks to be getting into that game, too. Shipping company DHL, among others, have also been experimenting with drone delivery.
