Durban – Two men arrested in connection with the murder of a KwaZulu-Natal farmer last week have been remanded in custody after a brief appearance in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the two would appear in court again next week when they are expected to apply for bail.

The pair was arrested after an intelligence-driven operation by police. The community of Seven Oaks, outside Greytown, was shocked last week after Sarel David Theron – a safety facilitator at Mondi Midlands – was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds, as well as apparent strangulation marks around his neck.

His colleagues became concerned when he did not report for work on Monday. They later found his body at his home on Mistly Farm. It is believed that the attack took place last Sunday evening after the men cut through the perimeter fence.

“The timeline of events is unclear, however, it appears that after Theron was stabbed, he managed to escape his attackers, locking himself in the house where he bandaged up his leg,” said Buffalo Security head, Roger Scheffer, earlier this week.

Scheffer said it was believed that the men then broke down the door and went into the house where they allegedly strangled Theron before ransacking the house completely.
